KYLE OF LOCHALSH is a likeable stayer who was third in this race from the same mark a year ago, so he could be the answer arriving here fresh. Several of these ran at Royal Ascot last time and can do better in slightly calmer waters, notably Wild Waves and Wonder Legend.

Won first 2 handicap starts last season and later a strong-finishing fourth in the Melrose at York (13.8f). Gelded over the winter and not kicked on so far this term, albeit latest third of 9 in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Ascot was a fair effort.

Progressive in handicaps at 3, scoring twice over 1½m, and he shaped well on his return when fourth of 12 to Manxman in 2m Goodwood handicap in May. Matched that form at Newcastle since and he can remain competitive.

Useful stayer who held his form well after winning a Salisbury handicap in good style last spring. Wasn't seen to best effect on return at Southwell in April, but probably needed the run in any case and should pay his way again this season. Shortlisted.

Presumably not the easiest to train but he did fare better than he had at Kempton in January when fourth of 10 in handicap at Newmarket (14f) in May. Brushed aside in the Ascot Stakes upped to 20f last time and while this is easier, others are still more persuasive.

    Verdict
Been in fine form on AW, drawing clear to land good 2m Newcastle handicap on Good Friday. Folded upped in class/trip in Group 1 Gold Cup and this will be a far better guide as to his level on turf.

Won twice over hurdles for Gary Brown and even better form when second in 19.5f Punchestown handicap for her new yard. Well ridden in a tactical race when landing 4-runner handicap at Newbury 3 weeks ago. Just out of the weights in a better race but he's in good nick.

Irresolute performer who didn't kick on from a promising start for Simon & Ed Crisford but did at least show some aptitude for hurdling this year. Failed to get home over 21.7f when set a tough task in the Queen Alexandra and this a more suitable assignment.

    Verdict
Back to winning ways returned to a longer trip at Lingfield (15.8f) in April and was beaten only by an improver at Goodwood next time. Another sound effort at Newmarket but he's just out of the handicap in a deeper race.
